While exit interviewing is not a new concept, there are many reasons why conducting exit interviews is more important than in the past. In many cases, employees are more self-directed and, hopefully, more engaged in their jobs. With many organizations having “flat” reporting structures, employees at all levels are asked to take a more active role in providing ideas, solutions, and opinions about how an organization can be more effective. That mindset continues after an employee’s termination. Gathering valuable information from an employee who has decided to resign or has left the organization is critical in measuring the success of the organization as well as defining issues that can improve retention and assist in recruitment efforts.
